Was britain really invaded in 1066?

How can a group of small people really invade a country the size of the UK in an age with no communication? How can they just win a battle then all of a sudden start "invading" the rest of the country? My guess is Britain was not invaded but a small part of Britain i.e. Hastings was invaded, and took over and dominated by the French. Am I correct?
