Insurance co took payment without my knowledge?

I paid for my policy by monthly payments...the policy ended in feb and my policy ended in feb but insurance co took a payment out in march when I had not agreed to renew the policy. I took my car off the road in march to mot but i didnt inform the insurance co ...I thought you had to phone them up to renew it ..can I get my march payment back...Ive just rung them and they want �88 to cancel it.the insurance co is HASTINGS DIRECT
